The Charrúas are a group of award-winning Uruguayan musicians who are visiting Aotearoa to be part of the 2023 Tauranga Jazz Festival, where they will present their candombe-jazz fusion style.
Candombe is a Rio de la Plata music and dance, introduced originally by African slaves to Uruguay during colonial times. Since then, it has fused with other local styles to become a unique rhythm, today popularly recognised as a Uruguayan trademark. Afro-Latin music followers will recognise the son clave, a 3-2 rhythm, heard continuously under the melody played. In 2009, candombe was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
