Christchurch Symphony Orchestra 2016 Season

It is with immense pleasure that we bring you our 2016 concert season. This year will be a year of some of the most momentous and ground-breaking works ever composed, with a special focus on the diverse cultural elements of the various communities that make up the city we know as Christchurch.

Velocity, rhythmic energy and movement are all elements reflected in this year’s programme. Throughout the season, the orchestra will be performing some of the greatest symphonies ever written alongside an array of electrifying new works. We are delighted to be featuring several talented local performers and composers, from CSO Principal Clarinet Ellen Deverall leading a trans-Tasman trio of clarinettists in Eve de Castro Robinson’s Triple Clarinet Concerto to The Topp Twins, and works inspired by our Asia-Pacific neighbours with whom Christchurch has a close relationship.

Other highlights include the return of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra for a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and we also have the pleasure of welcoming Internationally acclaimed oboist and UNESCO Artist for Peace Gordon Hunt to perform and direct a concert in our new Artist series. Kiwi theatre and television star Esther Stephens will take the stage with singer-songwriter Tama Waipara and actor Cameron Douglas in Mad Men & Dangerous Women to perform the musical hits from the golden era of the 50s and 60s, backed by a full orchestra.
