Hockin House was built 1893 for 450 pounds, and is cared for by the Waikato Historical Society. It was originally in the Waikato Hospital grounds, and became surplus to requirements in 1971 and was put up to tender.
However, the Waikato Historical Society obtained the building, and it was then relocated to nearby Graham Park beside the hospital at the end of Selwyn Street. It was reopened on Saturday, October 27 1979, so has been on this site for just over 40 years. The building has been refurbished and now serves both as a display of life prior to 1939, and for the society's meetings.
The open days are the society's opportunity to show historical Hockin House, listed a grade 2 building with NZ Heritage, to the general public.
