Following on from the Religious Diversity Courses last year, EarthDiverse is offering further courses in Contemporary Issues in Religion series, which focuses on special topics in religion and addresses a different issue or theme each Term.
It currently meets in Tauranga on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-8:30pm during 2019, according to the following Term schedule:
- Term 3: Religious Fundamentalism, Extremism and Terrorism
- Term 4: Religion and Nonviolence
Term 3: Religious Fundamentalism, Extremism and Terrorism.
(Eight weekly sessions meeting in Tauranga beginning on Tuesday 30 July, ending on Tuesday 17 September 2019).
This eight-week course involves a detailed study of the history, context and contemporary issues of religious fundamentalism, extremism and terrorism in all of the world’s main faith and belief traditions. We’ll explore the differences between these terms and view, in detail, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh fundamentalism and extremism.
Term 4: Religion and Nonviolence
(Eight weekly sessions meeting in Tauranga beginning on Tuesday 15 October, ending on Tuesday 3 December 2019)
This Term course will pick up where “Religious Fundamentalism, Extremism and Terrorism” leaves off, focusing on peaceful forms of religious practice, and will discuss key issues ranging from the Jain concept of ahiṃsā, the Hindu concept of satyāgraha, and the Jewish notion of Tikkun Olam, and others, along with key figures like Mahātmā Gāndhī, Martin Luther King, and Khān Abdul Ghaffār Khān.
