Kate De Goldi is a champion! A champion for writers and a champion for readers. Aware that not all children, young people and their communities have the same opportunities to develop a love of reading, Kate is on a mission to do something about that with the National Library.

Well-known for her award-winning books for children and young people, and as a book reviewer on Radio New Zealand for 20 years, Kate talks to Turnbull Chief Librarian Chris Szekely about the Communities of Readers programme, her recent residency in Otago, and Annual Ink. She may even tantalise with a taste of her next novel.

Says Kate De Goldi:

I am a fiction writer who also writes essays and speeches on literary subjects, but I think of myself in many ways as a professional reader. I review and discuss books in both print and broadcast media, with a particular emphasis on children’s literature; I am also often asked to moderate other writers’ sessions at literature festivals — so a good deal of my working life is spent — most happily — reading and thinking about other people’s writing.

Perhaps the best part of my working year, though, is the time I spend teaching creative writing in schools throughout New Zealand — there is nothing quite as rousing and nourishing for a writer as close proximity to the imaginative life and perspective of young people. — Katedegoldi.com

About the speaker
Kate De Goldi is one of New Zealand's most celebrated authors. She has published a range of short stories, collections and novels for adults and children. De Goldi's novel The 10 pm Question (2008) was published to critical acclaim both in New Zealand and overseas, quickly becoming an iconic piece of New Zealand literature. De Goldi has been extensively involved with numerous programmes, committees, and organisations focused on creative writing, education and New Zealand literature.
