Sarjeant Gallery

The Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui is pleased to present the first in a series of artist talks that will take place in the Nikaū Room at the Backhouse, 28 Taupō Quay.

Christopher Ulutupu is the new artist-in-residence at Tylee Cottage from July – November. Of Samoan, Niuean and German descent, Ulutupu’s engaging video and performance based practice uses the conventions of cinematic storytelling to interrogate the relationships between landscape and indigenous identities. He will discuss his past and present work and what he’s planning for his time in Whanganui. The Gallery’s residency programme is generously supported by Creative NZ (use logo please)

Caroline Mcquarrie is the second artist-in-residence at ‘The Gullies’, a 250ha sheep and beef farm, full of native bush and rolling hills in the Rangitikei, near Marton. Hosted by Laura and Richard Morrison, this unique eight week residency programme brings together art and agriculture. McQuarrie is an interdisciplinary artist and Senior Lecturer in in Photography at Whiti o Rehua School of Art, Massey University, Wellington. Her work explores personal, familial and community histories and the role that photography and hand-crafted textiles might play in interrogating these narratives. She will discuss past work and what she’s been working on during her current residency.

When: Thursday 24 August 2023, 7 – 8.30pm
Where: The Nikaū Room at the Backhouse, 28 Taupō Quay (look out for our distinctive yellow sandwich board outside)
