Yeon Hyang Hoe (Korean Brush Calligraphy)

Main Gallery: Auckland Calligraphers' group, Yeon Hyang Hoe (YHH), proudly display their 19th exhibition of brush artworks to welcome the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit, 2023. Yeon Hyang Hoe aims to promote Korean culture and calligraphy to reach out to the wider community in Aotearoa. During this annual, much-anticipated display, gallery visitors will be able to use traditional materials to write inspirational phrases or poems.

Hewson Gallery: Gallery visitors will have the opportunity to view a special display of rare decorative Korean Calligraphy folding walls from a personal collection belonging to well-respected Korean Calligraphy tutor Seung-jae Yu. Some of these scrolls date back to the 19th century and provide a glimpse of the clash between conservatism and the enlightenment group facing the challenging social, political and cultural wave from the West.
