You are warmly invited to our next after work music concert "Ich hab’ im Traum geweinet... I cried in a dream..." at the Goethe-Intitut in Wellington. On Friday, the 19th of July, we welcome two well-known Wellington-based classical musicians, Pepe Becker (voice) and Dan Poynton (piano), who have known each other since their university days. They have since performed together and separately in many parts of the world in a variety of genres from early music to contemporary NZ music, and are now collaborating to present a beautiful concert of heart-warming and heart-wrenching Lieder by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
"When I was 16 I stumbled upon a recording of Schumann's Dichterliebe. This threw me into a new phantasmic world of aching intimacy. Whether it's Schumann's avant-garde psychology or his young friend Brahms' radiant ecstasy, the tears and dreams of German Lieder are a singular, haunting land to wander in.
But for me there's sometimes something missing: singers often drown the intimacy of the music with just a bit too much Opera! And for years I've wanted to perform this music with my old friend Pepe Becker. Pepe is not only a leading Early Music singer with a purity and nuance of tone to die for, but she's also a keen child of our time with her searchings into contemporary music - and life itself.
Come with us on this experimental Odyssey into this music and poetry, which though rooted in a more Romantic time, often floats naturally into our troubled era, perhaps offering us some sort of redemption...."
-Dan Poynton
