Beekeeping -Next Step

Find out how honey is extracted, recognise and prevent swarming, manage pests and construct a hive - includes a visit to an apiary so bring your beekeeper's outfit.

Description
This is a practical and hands-on experience so bring your beekeeper’s outfit and your lunch. Please check your course instructions for more information on what you need to bring on the day. The tutor can lend you a veil if you don't have one, please let the CEC office know a week before the course is due to run so this can be arranged.

The workshop starts in the classroom and is followed by a visit to a local apiary. (Please note that you will working with live bees during the visit so there is a chance of being stung by one.)

If weather isn't suitable on the day, the morning session will still go ahead but the visit will be postponed to the next available Saturday. Please note that if you can't make the catch-up visit, it's not possible to join in later courses due to number restrictions (a part-refund will be made). You must have done the Beginners' course first.


By the end of the workshop, you'll be able to:
- List the key steps in setting up a hive
- Describe how honey is extracted
- State what causes swarming and some ways of preventing it
- Describe what needs to be done to manage Varoa and American Foul Brood
- Construct kitset frames for a honey super
- Open up and inspect a hive

Note: Courses need a minimum number to go ahead so if we don't have enough enrolments a few days before the start date, we have to cancel. We'll let you know by email so please check yours regularly. For those who have completed the Beginners' course or equivalent.
