Take action for nature this Conservation Week with a hands-on citizen science session at Sir Peter Blake MERC
Seize this opportunity to get to know your local environment a bit better. Participate in a survey, collect valuable data and connect with others. Choose one of two sessions outlined below, get outside to collect the data, and then regroup for three inspiring short presentations.
Join us from 2 pm on Saturday 7th September

Litter Intelligence monitoring, with Sustainable Coastlines
Discover how collecting data during clean-ups can influence policy change
- thorough clean up of the ‘Survey Area’ (100 metres X 20 m)
- categorise litter for the audit & enter the data

Water quality monitoring, with Wai Care Auckland Council
Use Physical & biological tests to build a picture of stream health
- measure important components of water quality
- learn about invertebrate identification/classification

The second portion of our event will provide insight into why these monitoring projects are important, where you can find this publicly available data, and connect you to additional opportunities to act through other citizen science projects, like iNaturalist.

What to expect:
- Meet like-minded people
- Participate in a citizen science session at Long Bay
- Hear from guest speakers about projects you can get involved in
- Hot drinks & afternoon tea provided in MERC wharenui (hall)
- Please wear close-toed shoes - all other equipment provided.

Stay tuned to our Seaweek and Facebook event page for the latest information.
