South Canterbury Death Cafe:
A Safe Space for Open Conversations about Death and Dying

Hello, Kia Ora, and welcome

Our Purpose
The Death Cafe helps people talk about death and dying and live more fully. We come together as equals to share our thoughts and experiences about death and dying without any set agenda. Our conversations are open and respectful, creating a compassionate environment for everyone to express themselves freely.

Our Approach
We gather simply as people who will eventually die, sharing and learning from each other. By discussing death and dying, we hope to understand better and become more at ease with the concept of death. We recognise living and dying as part of the natural cycle of existence, and by our discussion, we are helping to build stronger and more fearless communities.

Our Discussions
Our discussions are open and free of ideology. We follow the Death Cafe principle of not pushing participants toward any conclusions about life, death, or the afterlife, allowing everyone to explore their beliefs.

Who is Welcome
Adults are welcome, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, religion, faith, ethnicity, disability, or experience with death. Please note that the Death Cafe is not suitable for children. This isn't a place for grief counselling, those still grieving or for those uncomfortable discussing death.

What to bring
Bring an open mind and a willingness to join in the conversation.

Registrations are required as we are limited to 25 people,

I've experienced the grief and joy of being human. I've seen these emotions in others and felt them myself. I'm thankful for the love and happiness I've found, as they are vital to our existence. I believe exploring life and death helps us understand ourselves better and that talking about death can reduce the fear I've seen when loved ones pass away. As a funeral celebrant, coach, and mentor in Timaru, South Canterbury, I help people navigate life, death, and change. I’m trained as a Death Doula and have worked as a funeral director, and I continue to learn and grow in my professional practice.
