Delve - 3 Painters I 3 Practices I 3 Processes
To Delve: to dig, to explore, to reach within.
Karen Covic I Ruth Phipps I Jo Dalgety
These three artists share a connection through their association with Railway Street Gallery and first-year study in the Whitecliffe School of Fine Arts Master of Arts programme. Together, as individual artists, they explore their internal motivations in mark-making.
Karen Covic’s current inquiry is concerned with the action of making and unmaking. Through a process of layering materials, line and colour, she looks to show the process of unravelling, or coming undone. In her work the grid of the tapestry loom presents an ordered framework which competes with the uncontrolled fibres and tangle of loose threads.
Ruth Phipps is interested in exploring the tensions between recognition and ambiguity. Her central concerns address the quality of nearness and a concentrated attention to detail. Through a slow observation of the texture of light as it reveals surface detail in ambiguous space, her works present an altered reality.
Jo Dalgety's focus is the story of the Hauraki Plains, the ancient forest and swampland and the people that lived there. By telling her ancestors' story, along with that of the area, she aims to share how the landscape was changed, provoke thought, and spark conversations.

There will be a Q & A with the 3 artists on Saturday 12th October 3-5pm.
All are welcome, this will be a wonderful opportunity to explore, to dig deeper, to DELVE into the practices and motivations behind the work shown on the gallery walls.
We look forward to seeing you there.
