Leys Orchestra's first visit to Helensville opens with Schubert's melodious and energetic 'Overture in Italian Style', written at the age of 20 years.

The programme features talented young local soloist Emily Rendall in the bright and cheerful 'Flute Concerto in G' by Gluck. Emily performed 'Ballade for Flute and Orchestra' by Carl Reinecke in Warkworth and Orewa last year, and is proud to finally perform in her home town with the reopening of the Helensville War Memorial Hall.

The delightful 'Kinder Symphonie' by Reinecke features a variety of toy instruments from drum and trumpets to cuckoo, rattle and tea tray, presenting unusual challenges for our instrumentalists.

The jaunty 'On Grandma's Birthday' is an evocative children's march with a prominent part for toy drum, written in 1933 by the very popular composer Jonny Heykens.

Nicknamed the 'Spanish Mozart', Juan Crisostomo Arriaga became a touchstone for Basque nationalism in the early ninetheenth century. In today's programme we play the Finale of the one symphony he wrote before his early death aged 20 in 1826.

Edwardian composer Amy Woodforde-Finden wrote music that transported her listeners to exotic and romantic worlds, bringing the sounds of faraway places to European audiences. 'Kashmiri Song' is one of her most famous pieces.

The energetic 'Shooting Stars Galop' by Holst brings the programme to a bright conclusion.

Admission is free.
