This exhibition brings together artists at differing stages of their career who all spent periods of creative time in 2022 at the historic homestead Karekare House, close to Karekare Beach. Their work variously references the coastal landscape, light and moods, the legends informing the land, the relationship to place and the beauty yet sheer immensity of nature.

The six artists represented in the show are Alexis Neal, Brendon Leung, Claudia Kogachi, Josephine Jelicich, Kalisolaite ‘Uhila and Tira Walsh. The outcomes of their residencies show six very different artistic responses which nevertheless combine underlying similarities and complementary themes. In each case the residency experience left a profound mark on the artist and their art practice.

The West Coast has long been an inspiration to artists and the Karekare House residency offers artists from various disciplines a tranquil environment in which to develop their practice, pursue new ideas and foster creative conversations with the local community and wider general public.

The Eden Arts Karekare House residency was launched at the end of 2017 and is offered by the Eden Arts Trust in partnership with the Karekare House Trust. Eden Arts is best known for its flagship event Artists in Eden Day, traditionally held every March in Mt Eden Village, proceeds from which have enabled the Trust to celebrate and support the arts for more than 35 years.

Opening event - Wednesday 21 February 5.30 to 7pm
Artist talk - Saturday 24 February 2pm
