Public Sector Language Learners

Running weekly since March 2024, this is a dedicated time and space for any public servants wanting to maintain or make meaningful progress in their languages, in a comfortable and supportive environment.

You can find us at 105 Manners Street every Wednesday between 5:30 and 7:30pm. Simply ring the doorbell and someone will come to the door to greet you!

PSLL is free to attend and open to all languages - you can bring your own language-learning materials or use our library of shared resources.
There are desks, tables, and couches at the venue, as well as a kitchenette supplied with tea, coffee, hot water, cutlery, and a microwave.
You are welcome to bring outside food and drink - just no smoking or alcohol on the premises, as it is a community venue.

Frequently asked questions:

Is this a language class?
No, it's more of a study group - some people choose to work quietly on their own, some find people to do conversation practice with in a shared language (including NZSL), and some are just there to chat and swap language learning tips with others, regardless of language. How you use the time and space is completely up to you.

Do I need to register?
You are welcome to register using the Google Form (please see the QR code on the poster) but it's not necessary.
Simply show up to 105 Manners Street anytime between 5:30 and 7:30pm on a Wednesday, and ring the doorbell - someone will come to the door to greet you.

Do I need to be a current public servant?
We understand that many people are affected by the recent changes in the sector. As long as you support our kaupapa of languages, culture, and contributing to a friendly environment, you are welcome to attend regardless of your age or work situation.

What if I can't attend every week, or be there for the whole two hours?
There is absolutely no expectation or obligation to attend! Just drop in when you can. Some people come along for 10 minutes before heading to a language class, some people stay the whole time, some show up once every couple months. We treat it like a 'third place' - if you show up on a Wednesday evening, you can be sure to find some likeminded people.

How do I check if the event is still on this week?
Cancellations are rare (we've been running since March and can count on one hand the number of times we've had to cancel) but we will notify you of any cancellations through Eventfinda. If you register using the Google Form, we can also email you of any cancellations. You can also keep up-to-date through the venue's Instagram account (@tepokapuhapori).
