Whakatū Nelson! We're bringing our talented craftspeople back to your city this September 7th at Fairfield House. Learn how to make a hand brush or a pencil brush with Gemma Stratton, and the traditional craft of hand spinning with Annie Mackenzie.
Hand brush with Gemma Stratton
Make a useful hearth style hand brush using locally sourced wood and fibre. Practical to hold, this sturdy brush can be used to tidy up many spaces, from the workbench to the floor to your vehicle. Skills learnt in this workshop include fibre preparation and cord making using tī kōuka.
Pencil brush with Gemma Stratton
Learn how to make a small versatile brush using wood and fibres sourced from local surrounds. These little brushes are useful in many ways, including in the kitchen for oiling pans, in the workshop for oiling wood, for applying slip to pottery, or for childrens’ water painting.
Drop spindle spinning with Annie Mackenzie
During this workshop you’ll learn the key skills to start hand spinning beautifully soft yarn to use in your knitting, crochet or weaving projects. By learning to use a simple drop spindle, you’ll engage in an ancient craft that has been practised throughout the world for thousands of years.
