The State Care Survivors Apology Event is a landmark gathering that brings together survivors of state care from across Aotearoa New Zealand to receive a formal apology from the Crown for the abuse and neglect they experienced while in state care. This event, held at Pipitea Marae, provides a culturally safe and supportive space for survivors and their whānau to come together, share their stories, and reflect on the significance of the Crown's apology.

The day is designed not only to acknowledge past harm but also to create a platform for healing, connection, and empowerment for survivors. It will include live music, cultural performances, shared meals, and opportunities for survivors to speak and engage in supportive conversations.

Many of the survivors attending face financial hardship, and the Crown is covering some travel costs to help ensure accessibility. The event is expected to draw around 300 attendees, including 120 staying overnight at the marae, creating a strong sense of community for those present.

What makes this event truly special is its focus on providing a culturally appropriate space, following Māori tikanga (customs and protocols), which helps to ensure survivors feel respected, acknowledged, and supported throughout the day.
