We are proud to present the beautiful works of Sue Newitt & Myriam Goos for Nelson Clay Week, 28 Sept. - 12 Oct.

Sue Newitt 'Textured'
"I am working with a variety of different clays - mainly hand throwing stoneware and porcelain which I often add to in some way. I high fire my work in a reduction kiln with glazes developed over many years. I am enjoying changing the shape of my pieces using slabs and coils to give the work a more organic feel. Texture and slip trailing are my main forms of decoration. I use the beautiful glazes from Japan and China such as celadons and shino which work so well with porcelain and stoneware. My goal is to use these glazes in a more modern context to enhance each piece. It is always exciting to open the kiln and see what will come out next."
Sue studied art and ceramics in Dunedin 1978 - 1981. She lives in Mariri, just out of Motueka, where she's been making pottery for over 35 years.

Myriam Goos 'Grounded' -
"Drawn to muted colours and my signature mustard yellow, I create individual decorative pieces and small batches of functional ceramics, using the potter's wheel and various hand-building techniques. Intuitively I aim for organic shapes and textured surfaces, working mainly with groggy clay enhances this look. I often incorporate sand from beaches across New Zealand. So, every single piece is even more unique and holds the richness and diversity of beautiful Aotearoa.

After some years of creating and exploring by myself, I felt it was time to share my knowledge and love of clay with other people. Teaching pottery classes has become my second passion. Seeing my students' progress and their excitement for pottery is an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience."
