Film music has always been a fascinating subject. Specially the golden era of Hindi Film music when music directors like SD Burman, Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, R D Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, Roshan, O P Nayyar, Salil Choudhary... the list goes on! The melodious geniuses they created nearly 60-75 years ago are still popular and hummed by everybody. Of course they also had great singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsale, Kishore Kumar, Geeta Dutt, to name a few! Music is after all a mix of 7 Swar (notes) and yet a combination of those in the right mix have evoked passion, pathos and love for generations! The Indian classical music had a great influence on Film music and sheer mastery over melody by these music directors created an era of "musical beauties" based on classical raags. While Raag sangeet is often associated with concerts in darbars and to limited audiences with an ear for that, film music has no such boundaries.
Migrant Heritage Charitable Trust Inc through MigHT-i Music are making an attempt to bring to you the beauty of Raag sangeet with influenced the Film world and made it popular. Along the way many a singers and musicians achieved tremendous fame and love of the masses. As many of you are aware, Raag sangeet is also classified by the time of the day it is played. So on the occasion of Sharad Purnima (Kojagiri) we plan to bring to Auckland audiences an evening of SUR SARGAM which will take you through a melodious journey of film songs based on RAAG sangeet. The evening will feature the soulful singing of Hemant Shirsat and vocal wizardry of Vidya Teke. The Sur will be accompanied by SARGAM with fast fingers of Samir Bhalodkar on Samvadini and keyboard genius Hemant Thaker will complete the scene. Adding to the sargams will be taal specialist Nikhil Ghate of Tabla and versatile Prashant Datt on Dholak/Octapad. Precise percussion adds to the beauty of Sargam and enhances the Sur, a department specialised by Pramod Niphadkar.
