“Mā te kākahu huruhuru o te Tiriti tātau katoa e whakarākei, e whakamahana! The feathered kākahu of the Treaty must adorn us and warm us all.”
– Tā Tipene O’Regan in the Foreword to Kō Kai Tahu me Te Tiriti, 2024.
Join kaimahi from the Ngāi Tahu Archive and Network Waitangi Ōtautahi for a special workshop where we will explore the largely unknown story of the Ngāi Tahu signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Te Waipounamu and consider how Tangata Whenua and Tāngata Tiriti can work together toward Te Tiriti as a framework for the future.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed at Ōnuku in Akaroa harbour on 30 May 1840. Three months later a
symbolic flag-raising and court sitting took place at Takapūneke. This event was the first effective
demonstration of British sovereignty in Te Waipounamu. A re-enactment of the flag-raising was held
during the official National South Island Centennial Commemorations of the signing of Te Tiriti at
Akaroa in April 1940. Green & Hahn, 1940. Collection of Akaroa Museum, Photo:163.
Presented by the Ngāi Tahu Archive, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Network Waitangi Ōtautahi.
Free event, but registration is essential.
