The Organist Entertains!
Some organists play ‘recitals’, often comprising music more suited to those in the know (other
organists, and people familiar with organ repertoire).
Others play concerts for a wider public, including both organists and audience members who may
know and love music written for other instruments rather than organ music. International concert
organist Martin Setchell is one of them! Hence the title of this event promoted by the Wellington
Organists Association, with sponsorship kindly contributed by The Lion Foundation and The Pelorus
Trust.
Being a Town Hall organist (of Christchurch city) rather than a church or cathedral organist, and hailing
from the North of England, Martin belongs to the Town Hall organ tradition of playing for and
entertaining a wide audience.
His concert at St Andrews on the Terrace, Wellington on Saturday 19 October at 3pm will include not
only organ music by (Grison’s Toccata and Variations on Gershwin’s song ‘I got rhythm’) but
arrangements for organ of dances by Bach, opera music by Bizet and Verdi, film themes (‘Gabriel’s
Oboe’ by Ennio Morricone) and ballet music (the famous Sabre Dance by Aram Khachaturian).
If you thought organ music was meant only for worship services in church ‘The Organist Entertains’ will
make you think again, so do come along! Admission is free – koha is welcome to help offset costs.
