Tom Walsh is New Zealand's shot-put champion and is holder of both the indoor and outdoor national records while also travelling up to 250 days per year for international competitions. Growing up on a sheep and beef farm north of Timaru, he learned the value of perseverance and resilience from a young age and his relentless work ethic and unwavering determination were undoubtedly born in these early years.Diagnosed with dyslexia, academic success didn't come easily for Tom but his time at Timaru Boys’ solidified the qualities of perseverance and grit that would serve him so well in his future endeavors. His incredible journey, marked by his resilience in the face of steep challenges, serves as an inspiration to others striving to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
As well as being our best shot putter, Tom is a qualified builder with a deep passion for his craft, and a fantastic public speaker.

Selected achievements:
• Gold medals at the 2016 and 2018 World Indoor Championships
• Silver medal at the 2024 World Indoor Championships
• Bronze medal at the 2014 World Indoor Championships
• Bronze medals at the 2016 and 2021 Olympic Games
• Commonwealth Games Champion in 2018 and 2022
• Silver medalist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

Despite his demanding schedule, he still finds time to pursue his hobbies, particularly golf, and enjoys the occasional opportunity to work on building projects.
Tom's journey, marked by his resilience in the face of challenges, serves as an inspiration to others striving to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
