Free improvisation with Auckland based pianist Hermione Johnson, Reuben Derrick (Chch) on saxophones and Chris O'Connor on drums.
Hermione is a classically trained pianist who found her musical freedom through the altered sonorities of prepared piano. She is a stalwart of Aotearoa's experimental music scene, and has performed at many festivals locally and internationally playing improvised music with the likes of Jeff Henderson and Anthony Donaldson, Tom Callwood and Riki Gouch. Internationally she has performed with Tony Buck and Roger Turner and her solo performance at Austria's Unlimited Music Festival 2019 garnered critical acclaim with Israeli critic Eyal Hareuveni describing it as a 'magnificent set that kept introducing surprising, magical timbres of the piano and left many attentive listeners wishing to see more and more of Johnson.'
The O'Connor Derrick Johnson Trio brings the complexity of Johnson's prepared piano together with two of Aotearoa's most dynamic and talented musicians.
As a drummer, Chris O Connor has played with virtually all of Aotearoa's most celebrated icons: Don McGlashan, Neil Finn, SJD, Trinity Roots, Nadia Reid and Phoenix Foundation to name just a few. He features on more than 40 albums and has recorded and performed music in many theatre and dance works, including: White Cloud Black Shadow (Tim Finn and Simon Bennet), The Irish Annals or Aotearoa (David O’Donnell), Caberet (Michael Hurst).
Reuben Derrick is a deep listening clarinetist and saxophonist whose work encompasses a diverse range of musical languages. His compositions include works for jazz orchestra, small ensembles and improvisational groups as well as electroacoustic works that focus on environmental sound. Rueben also collaborates with artists from other cultural traditions and disciplines including dancers, painters, poets, sculptors and film-makers. In recent years Reuben's musical adventures have taken him to Colombo, Warsaw, Vienna, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland. Back home he is always busy with a smorgasbord of sound makers and other artists.
